Job Description
Metro Nashville Public Schools (MNPS) is one of the largest and most diverse school districts in the United States, educating more than 80,000 students in the Nashville-Davidson County area. As a public education institution, MNPS prides itself on delivering excellent education and supporting the holistic development of students. The district’s mission is to deliver a great public education to every student, every day. Their vision is to become the premier large school district in Tennessee and beyond by ensuring that every student is known and receives the tailored support they need to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. MNPS values diversity, inclusion, equity, and excellence, actively promoting an inclusive work environment that respects and reflects the community it serves. Employment at MNPS offers meaningful opportunities to contribute to the educational and social well-being of youth in a dynamic urban environment.
This particular position is part of the Nutrition Services team within MNPS. The school nutrition services function plays a critical role in supporting student health, well-being, and academic success through the provision of nutritious meals adhering to strict health and safety regulations. The role is classified as nonexempt under the MNPS Support Hourly pay grade (MNPS.SCH001-H), with a work duration of 187 days per year. This position focuses on assisting the school nutrition staff to prepare and serve meals in a clean and sanitary environment while ensuring compliance with all relevant health and sanitation rules.
The primary responsibilities involve performing semi-skilled kitchen tasks such as slicing, chopping, cooking vegetables and meats, and pastry mixing. The employee helps prepare food in the right quantities based on daily menu guidelines. Maintaining cleanliness and sanitation in the kitchen area is essential, including cleaning equipment, washing dishes, sweeping and mopping floors, and sanitizing counters and tables in compliance with state health regulations. This role requires careful preparation of serving lines, filling steam tables, and arranging food pans in proper sequence for efficient meal service. Another important aspect of the job is serving students and staff with hospitality and care, providing appropriate food portion sizes, and maintaining clean, replenished serving areas. The individual may also assist in inventory management tasks, including receiving supply orders, verifying invoices, updating inventory records, and storing food and supplies properly to ensure continuous availability.
This role requires strong communication skills for customer interactions, particularly in answering questions about food content and nutrition or referring to appropriate personnel when needed. The job demands a proactive approach, attention to detail, and the ability to follow standardized procedures to guarantee food quality and safety. Working in this fast-paced environment offers applicants a chance to gain valuable experience in food preparation and nutrition service operations within a large public education setting committed to student success and equity.
