Job Description

Metro Nashville Public Schools (MNPS) is one of the largest and most diverse public school districts in the United States, located in Metro Nashville-Davidson County, Tennessee. Serving over 80,000 students across a wide range of communities, MNPS is committed to providing high-quality education and fostering environments where students can excel academically, socially, and emotionally. The district is recognized for implementing some of the most innovative education reform strategies nationwide aimed at improving student outcomes and becoming the highest-performing urban school district in the country. MNPS values diversity, inclusion, and equal opportunity for all employees and students alike, and it maintains a strong commitment to creating an equitable and supportive environment.

As part of the Nutrition Services department at MNPS, the role of Nutrition Services Assistant is vital in ensuring that students receive nutritious, safe, and well-prepared meals every school day across multiple campus locations. Classified as a nonexempt, hourly position under the MNPS Support pay grade, this role is part of a 197-day work year schedule, which aligns with the academic calendar. Within this supportive and collaborative environment, employees in Nutrition Services play a key role in maintaining high standards of cleanliness, food safety, and customer service in school cafeterias and kitchens.

The Nutrition Services Assistant works under the direct supervision of the cafeteria manager assisting with meal preparation and service tasks. This semi-skilled position involves slicing, chopping, and cooking various food items, as well as mixing pastries and measuring ingredients in accordance with daily menu specifications. Duties also include cleaning and sanitizing kitchen equipment and work areas in compliance with state health regulations to ensure a safe and sanitary food service environment for students and staff. The assistant helps prepare serving lines, fills steam table wells, and arranges food pans appropriately to meet meal service needs efficiently.

A strong emphasis is placed on customer service, as the Nutrition Services Assistant interacts directly with students and teachers, serving appropriate portions in a friendly and respectful manner. The role also requires managing inventory by receiving and verifying supply orders and storing food items properly to maintain continuous availability of meal components. Additionally, the assistant may provide information about nutritional content or refer inquiries to qualified personnel, supporting both the educational and health goals of the district through informed food service.

Educational requirements include a high school diploma or GED, and previous work experience in food preparation is preferred. The ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English is essential for completing daily responsibilities and ensuring adherence to health and safety standards. This role is ideal for individuals who are passionate about supporting child nutrition, enjoy working in team settings within an educational environment, and are committed to maintaining rigorous food safety practices.

Working for Metro Nashville Public Schools not only provides a meaningful opportunity to contribute to student well-being but also offers a workplace culture rooted in the district’s mission to deliver great public education every day. The district encourages professional growth, offers competitive hourly pay within the outlined support grade, and fosters an inclusive work environment that values diversity, equity, and inclusion. Employees in Nutrition Services are a critical part of the team dedicated to helping every student succeed through nutritious meals and positive service experiences.
