Job Description

Metro Nashville Public Schools (MNPS) is a prominent and diverse public school district serving the Nashville-Davidson County area. As one of the largest urban school systems in the United States, MNPS educates over 80,000 students across numerous schools. The district is widely recognized for its innovative reform strategies aimed at improving educational outcomes and equity in urban education. The district's commitment extends beyond academics to include social-emotional development and personalized learning experiences that cater to the unique interests, passions, and learning styles of each student. MNPS offers a rich variety of programs, including advanced academics, visual and performing arts, special education, English language support, and STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics) initiatives, ensuring there are educational pathways suited to every student's needs from Pre-K through graduation. The district’s vision is to be the premier large school district in Tennessee and beyond, dedicated to making sure every student is known and supported. Their mission centers on delivering excellent public education to every student every day.

The role of Nutrition Services Assistant at Metro Nashville Public Schools plays a vital part in supporting the district’s mission by ensuring the provision of nutritious and safely prepared meals to students and staff. This is a nonexempt, hourly position classified under the MNPS Support Hourly grade ladder with a pay grade MNPS.SCH001-H. The role encompasses performing various semi-skilled kitchen tasks under the supervision of the manager to support school nutrition staff. Responsibilities include preparing food items such as chopping vegetables, cooking meats, mixing pastries, and measuring ingredients to align with daily menu guidelines. In addition, the assistant is responsible for maintaining cleanliness and sanitation of kitchen equipment and the work environment, adhering strictly to state health and sanitation regulations.

The Nutrition Services Assistant also prepares serving lines by filling steam table wells and arranging pans in the correct sequence to facilitate smooth meal service. Interacting with students and teachers, the assistant serves appropriate food portions in a friendly and courteous manner, helps maintain the serving line cleanliness and replenishment, and addresses customer inquiries regarding food content or nutritional value or refers these queries to appropriate personnel when necessary. The role requires receiving supply orders, verifying shipment quantities against invoices, properly storing food and supplies, and maintaining updated inventory records to ensure continuous availability of necessary items. This position requires a high school diploma or GED and ideally 1-3 years of relevant food preparation experience. Basic English proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking is essential for effective communication and adherence to health standards.

Working at MNPS offers the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to the well-being and success of thousands of students. Being part of the team means supporting a district committed to equity, academic rigor, and student-centered learning. The Nutrition Services Assistant position is an integral support role that helps create a safe and healthy school environment through quality meal preparation and service. The district values diversity and inclusion, maintaining an equal opportunity employment philosophy that welcomes applicants from all backgrounds and provides accommodations as required under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
