Job Description
Sparrow W & L Company is a highly respected fine wine merchant with a century-long legacy in New Jersey. Founded over 100 years ago, the company has established itself as a premier destination for wine enthusiasts and connoisseurs alike. Recognized nationally, including being a finalist for Retailer of the Year in 2019 by Market Match Magazine, Sparrow W & L operates two upscale stores situated in prime locations in Hoboken, encompassing a combined space of 12,000 square feet. These stores have become landmarks in the region, well known for their exceptional selection of fine wines, craft spirits, and beers. Alongside their competitive pricing, the company also prides itself on a leading-edge website, catering to a sophisticated clientele with tastes often comparable to top New York City wine shops. Due to its proximity to New York City, Sparrow W & L Company serves a diverse and discerning customer base, setting a high standard in the wine retail industry in the New Jersey and New York metropolitan areas.
The position available is ideal for a passionate wine professional who is eager to elevate their career. The company seeks a self-motivated and ambitious individual with excellent interpersonal skills and solid to advanced knowledge of wines. This role demands the ability to multitask efficiently in a dynamic, fast-paced retail environment, and familiarity with social media is considered a significant advantage. The candidate will be expected to work some evenings and two out of three weekend days regularly, requiring flexibility and dedication. This role offers an outstanding opportunity for growth, as the current Wine Director, who is the owner of the company, plans to delegate the position to the right candidate. Hence, this position is a critical step for those looking to advance to the level of Wine Director with a substantial salary increase and more responsibilities. This role provides not only a chance to immerse oneself in the wine industry deeply but also to learn from one of the most experienced wine retailers in the country. Moreover, the stores benefit from convenient locations within a short walking distance to Hoboken public transportation hubs, offering easy commutes from Midtown or Lower Manhattan in about 15 minutes and most of Northern New Jersey within 45 minutes, making it accessible for a broad range of professionals.
