Job Description

Kroger is a leading retail grocery company renowned for its commitment to providing exceptional customer service and high-quality products. As one of the largest supermarket chains in the United States, Kroger operates thousands of stores with a focus on fostering a positive community impact and maintaining robust operations across all departments. The company is built on core values including respect, honesty, integrity, diversity, inclusion, and safety, which are deeply embedded in its culture and daily operations.

The role of Assistant Store Manager at Kroger is a pivotal position that involves learning and supporting the operations of all store departments while sharing responsibility for overall store performance. This is a full-time role where you will be involved in managing various critical functions such as scheduling, security, maintenance, safety, sanitation, ordering, administration, and human resource-related duties. The Assistant Store Manager plays an essential role in reinforcing Kroger's best-in-class customer service reputation by assisting the store manager and associates in creating a favorable shopping experience.

In this role, you will assist the store manager in leading teams to effectively plan, implement, and execute merchandising and operational initiatives designed to improve store performance and customer satisfaction. You will engage with department heads and associates to identify opportunities within the store, develop timely solutions, and oversee action plan implementation. A key responsibility involves role modeling and demanding the highest level of customer service while addressing and resolving associate and customer issues promptly.

The Assistant Store Manager will also assume full operational responsibility in the absence of the store manager, ensuring seamless store functioning and adherence to budgetary goals such as weekly and annual sales targets, wage budgets, profit margins, safety standards, and shrink reduction. You will collaborate closely with department managers to maximize sales and profit potential while striving to improve each department's contribution to overall store success.

This position requires active participation in regular financial discussions at the store level, focusing on budget development, sales, labor expenses, shrink control, and other critical operational goals. Strong analytical skills are necessary to evaluate the competitive landscape within the district or division and respond with strategic initiatives to maintain Kroger's competitive edge.

As an inclusive leader, the Assistant Store Manager is expected to demonstrate and promote inclusive behavior among associates, fostering a respectful and diverse work environment. You will leverage coordinators and field staff to ensure that merchandising plans are successfully implemented to drive sales and profitability. Building and sustaining strong relationships with local community organizations is also a vital aspect of the role, helping to elevate the store's reputation and community engagement.

Additionally, the position involves facilitating proactive and productive relationships with union representatives or business agents, where applicable, and ensuring clear communication with associates to support effective duty execution. Serving as a liaison between store and district management, you will contribute insight into the effectiveness of merchandising and operational plans and programs.

Talent management is another important area of focus. The Assistant Store Manager will aid in staffing processes, aim to reduce employee turnover, and enhance retention strategies. Providing timely performance feedback to department heads and associates is critical for continuous improvement. Labor management and supply cost controls are managed daily to achieve both customer service and financial objectives.

You will ensure store-wide compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations as well as company policies. Supervisory duties include coaching and developing direct reports, completing performance reviews, and fostering a culture of accountability and excellence. The successful candidate must be capable of performing the essential functions of the role with or without reasonable accommodation. This leadership position is ideal for individuals passionate about retail management, customer service excellence, and operational success within a supportive and values-driven company environment.
