The role of a School Cafeteria Assistant Manager is a pivotal position within the Food and Nutrition Services department of Chesterfield County Public Schools. This position is responsible for assisting the cafeteria manager in planning, managing, monitoring, supervising, and providing support in the daily operations of the assigned school cafeteria. The Assistant Manager will play a critical role in food preparation duties and use independent judgment to ensure a smooth and efficient cafeteria operation that complies with USDA and CCPS food program requirements.

This position offers an employment opportunity that blends hands-on supervisory responsibilities with operational management in a school setting. The Assistant Manager will help forecast food and supply needs, assist with ordering according to production requirements, verify quality and accuracy of deliveries, and maintain accurate inventory records of kitchen supplies and food. Coordinating employee work schedules and participating in food preparation is an essential aspect of the role, along with organizing special catering functions, afterschool programs, and vending administration if applicable.

The Assistant Manager is responsible for supporting the manager in maintaining accurate records and accounts related to meal programs including free, reduced, paid, and reimbursable lunches and breakfasts. The role includes handling prepayments, managing customer accounts, balancing cash receipts, preparing deposits, and maintaining timely and accurate reports such as daily production, payroll, inventory, and vending reports.

Working collaboratively with other food service staff, school officials, and vendors is a crucial part of this job, which demands problem-solving skills and the ability to uphold the food service standards outlined in the Food and Nutrition Services Employee Handbook. The Assistant Manager may be required to lead kitchen operations in the absence of the manager and occasionally report to other school locations depending on staffing needs.

The physical demands of this position require regular standing, walking, lifting up to 50 pounds, and the ability to use hands for food preparation and kitchen equipment operation, including institutional kitchen equipment and vending machines. The work environment is typically in school cafeterias that involve exposure to hot and cold conditions, moving mechanical parts, and moderate noise levels. Safety precautions are essential to avoid workplace injuries.

Candidates for this role should have considerable knowledge of food preparation management, food service equipment, federal and state health and sanitation requirements, and nutrition program regulations. The position requires skills in record keeping, inventory control, basic bookkeeping, and the proficient use of computers. Effective communication and cooperative teamwork with students, parents, staff, and vendors are key to succeeding in this role. A valid ServSafe certification is required or must be obtained within 90 days of hire. Chesterfield County Public Schools offers competitive compensation ranging from $23,694.86 to $38,727.44 annually for this full-time role, which is based on a 7-hour workday for 183 days per year. Job Requirements

  • Valid ServSafe certification or obtain within 90 days
  • High school diploma or equivalent or related work experience
  • Minimum three years food service experience
  • Management experience preferred or combination of experience and training
  • Ability to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds
  • Some local travel required
  • Willingness to wear uniform
  • Successful completion of FBI criminal history investigation
  • Successful completion of State Police criminal history investigation
  • Successful completion of Child Protective Services investigation
  • Successful completion of tuberculosis screening
  • Ability to work 7 hours per day for 183 days per year
  • Ability to work in school cafeteria environment with exposure to hot and cold conditions and mechanical equipment

Job Qualifications

  • Considerable knowledge of food preparation management and operation
  • Experience operating modern food service equipment
  • Knowledge of federal and state health, nutrition, and sanitation requirements
  • Understanding of federal and/or nonfederal school lunch, breakfast, and afterschool feeding program requirements and regulations
  • Knowledge of administrative and office procedures including record keeping, inventory control, basic bookkeeping, and computer use
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare and merchandise food safely
  • Ability to prioritize work and identify and correct problems
  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations accurately and reconcile accounts
  • Ability to work cooperatively with students, parents, staff, coworkers, vendors, and the public
  • Desire for career improvement

Job Duties

  • Assist manager in ordering weekly food and supplies by established due dates and forecast production requirements
  • Assist manager in checking quality, quantity, and accuracy of weekly deliveries and invoices
  • Assist manager in forecasting and setting production needs and plan employee work schedules
  • Maintain an accurate inventory of all kitchen supplies and food
  • Plan, coordinate, assign and participate in food pre preparation
  • Organize and assist with special catering functions, afterschool programs, and vending administration
  • Assist manager in maintaining records and accounts including meal program reports, payroll records, and production reports
  • Process prepayments and customer account management, deposit preparation and bank deposits
  • Work with other food service workers, school officials, and staff to identify and correct problems
  • Follow all food service guidelines as per handbook
  • Assume responsibility for kitchen operations in manager’s absence
  • Report to another school location based on staffing needs
  • Perform other related duties as assigned
