The position available is Nutrition Services Assistant Kitchen Manager, Secondary, located at Northglenn High School. This is a permanent, regular part-time role with 36.25 hours per week, scheduled over 9 months per year, compensating an hourly wage ranging from $19.47 to $24.00 depending on experience and step placement. The role is classified at Grade G5 with a FTE of 0.90625.

In this role, the assistant kitchen manager serves as a key leader in managing daily kitchen operations and supporting the kitchen manager in ensuring efficient and timely food preparation within a large-scale school meal program. Responsibilities include leading the kitchen team through food preparation tasks, managing batch cooking, maintaining cleanliness and safety standards aligned with local health department regulations, and ensuring compliance with all state and federal nutrition service policies. The assistant manager also plays a vital role in customer relations by responding promptly and professionally to comments and concerns, fostering positive relationships with school staff, nutrition employees, and the wider community.

The position demands a strong understanding of food safety procedures, inventory control, cash handling, and special dietary accommodations, along with the ability to supervise operational functions in the kitchen. The assistant kitchen manager is expected to make routine decisions in the absence of the kitchen manager and assist in administrative tasks like preparing menu worksheets, managing storage areas, and reporting vendor issues. Job Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Criminal background check required
  • Must meet national professional standards for school nutrition professionals managing lunch and breakfast programs
  • Ability to successfully complete pre-hire post-offer physical examination
  • Must obtain and maintain department approved food safety training within six months of hire
  • Willingness to attend recommended professional development workshops and conferences
  • Must complete district courses Progressive Discipline and Classified Evaluation System within one year
  • Experience in food service supervision
  • Ability to work 36.25 hours per week
  • Ability to follow all health, safety, and nutrition regulations

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • More than one year of experience in a school meal program or food service management
  • Experience with large volume food preparation preferred
  • Nutrition services or other food service management training preferred
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state regulations
  • Ability to lead and supervise kitchen staff
  • Strong customer service skills
  • Ability to manage inventory and cash handling
  • Preferred SNA certification
  • Recommended membership in SNA and Colorado School Food Service Association
  • Recommended attendance at Colorado Department of Education workshops
  • Ability to complete required district courses within one year
  • Completion and maintenance of approved food safety training

Job Duties

  • Lead and direct kitchen team in food preparation activities including batch cooking and replenishing fruit and vegetable bar
  • Assist in preparing and ensuring daily menu worksheets are accurately completed
  • Maintain organization of storeroom, refrigerators, and freezers
  • Make routine decisions in absence of kitchen manager
  • Ensure compliance with health department standards, safety procedures, and department policies
  • Monitor cash collection from students and staff and prepare end-of-day reports
  • Follow special dietary needs procedures and assist in orders, inventory, and deliveries
  • Manage and report vendor issues when kitchen manager is not available
  • Perform other related duties as assigned
