Job Description
The City of Sacramento is a progressive and dynamic municipal government committed to providing high-quality services and fostering a supportive work environment for its employees. Situated in the vibrant state capital of California, the City serves a diverse population and is dedicated to upholding values of equity, inclusion, and community engagement. The City of Sacramento offers various employment opportunities, including career and non-career positions, that contribute to the wellbeing and efficient functioning of the community. One such opportunity is the Assistant Camp Chef position at Camp Sacramento, a unique seasonal food service facility located within the scenic Eldorado National Forest in Twin Bridges, California.
Camp Sacramento is a renowned facility that operates primarily during the warmer months and offers a wide range of services to residents and employees of the camp. The Assistant Camp Chef role is a non-career, part-time or seasonal position with employment dates from May 2026 to October 2026. It provides a chance to work in an outdoor, community-centered environment, contributing to the preparation and serving of meals in a large-scale kitchen setting. This position is ideal for individuals passionate about cooking, food service, and who enjoy working as part of a team in a fast-paced, physically engaging role.
The Assistant Camp Chef works under the general supervision of the Camp Chef and is responsible for preparing, baking, and cooking large quantities of food to meet the needs of the camp residents and staff. This role involves various food preparation tasks such as cleaning, chopping, weighing, and measuring ingredients, as well as operating commercial kitchen equipment. Additionally, the Assistant Camp Chef ensures that all food preparation areas, equipment, and utensils are sanitized and maintained according to strict health and safety guidelines to uphold high standards of sanitation.
Working at Camp Sacramento requires adherence to a range of important operational procedures, including inventory management, food quality evaluation, and proper storage techniques to prevent spoilage. The position does not include supervisory duties but requires collaboration with the Camp Chef and other kitchen staff to execute food service efficiently and safely. Given the outdoor location and nature of the facility, employees must be prepared to work in various weather conditions, at different elevations, and be physically capable of tasks that involve standing for extended periods and lifting up to 50 pounds.
This seasonal role requires candidates to participate in mandatory staff training sessions, usually held in late May or early June, and complete required certifications such as Mandatory Reporter training within two weeks of starting employment. The position also necessitates candidates to provide their own transportation to the camp site. As a seasonal service position, it offers invaluable experience in large-scale food preparation, commercial kitchen operations, and working in a unique environmental setting, though it does not provide standard employment benefits such as health insurance or paid time off.
The City of Sacramento values diversity and equal opportunity employment and has procedures in place to ensure fair hiring practices, including comprehensive screening and selection processes. Employment in this role is contingent upon passing a physical, criminal background check, and tuberculosis screening test. Additionally, the City adheres to the California Public Employee's Pension Reform Act (PEPRA) of 2013, which may affect applicant eligibility and selection. This position offers a distinctive opportunity to gain hands-on culinary experience in a unique outdoor environment while serving the local community at Camp Sacramento.
