Job Description

The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA), located in Richmond, Virginia, is recognized as one of the largest comprehensive art museums in the United States. Established to serve the citizens of the Commonwealth of Virginia, VMFA houses an extensive encyclopedic collection that spans over 6,000 years of world history and boasts more than 50,000 works of art. Its collections include the largest public Fabergé collection outside Russia, the finest Art Nouveau collection outside Paris, and one of the nation's finest collections of American art. The museum also holds significant collections of Chinese art, English silver, French Impressionism and Post-Impressionism, British sporting art, and modern and contemporary art, alongside renowned South Asian, Himalayan, and African art pieces. VMFA stands out as the only U.S. art museum that is open every day of the year with free general admission, offering an enriching experience to visitors throughout the year.

As a state-supported, privately endowed educational institution, VMFA’s mission is to collect, preserve, exhibit, and interpret art, while promoting the study of the arts to enrich the lives of all. Beyond just a museum, VMFA represents a vibrant hub for cultural education and artistic appreciation, with programs and exhibitions designed to inspire and engage diverse audiences. The institution thrives on innovation and inclusivity, aiming to provide an accessible and inspiring environment for artists, scholars, students, and the general public alike.

The Food Services Department at VMFA is an integral part of the visitor experience, offering unique and memorable dining opportunities that complement the artistic ambiance of the museum. The department operates Amuse Restaurant, a contemporary fine dining eatery overlooking the beautiful Robins Sculpture Garden. Amuse features an innovative menu developed with fresh, local ingredients that reflect the museum's commitment to creativity and quality. The dining experience at Amuse is designed to be an artistic endeavor in itself, creating an ambiance and sensory journey that parallels the museum's world-class exhibitions.

The Line Cook position, or Food Services Technician I, is a critical role within the Food Services Department. Reporting directly to the Amuse Executive Chef, the Line Cook is responsible for preparing menu items according to the chef’s detailed specifications and supporting the overall kitchen team in daily operations. This hourly-wage role offers a starting pay of $17.00 per hour and involves working in a dynamic, fast-paced environment where culinary expertise and teamwork are essential.

Candidates in this role will benefit from a flexible schedule that provides advanced notice of shifts and accommodates diverse availability since the museum and restaurant operate 365 days a year. The Line Cook will have the opportunity to hone their skills in preparing fine dining dishes, assisting with food prep for different museum venues including Best Café, Special Events, and Floris. Beyond cooking, this position requires a commitment to maintaining a sanitary, safe, and efficient kitchen environment, as well as supporting museum-wide efforts to deliver outstanding customer service.

VMFA values professionalism and fosters a collaborative team environment where employees are encouraged to grow their careers within the hospitality field. The museum offers perks such as free admission to special exhibitions, preview events, discounts on museum classes and programs, and discounts at Amuse and other onsite venues. Joining the Amuse team means becoming part of a mission-driven organization that directly supports the operations and educational goals of one of America’s premier cultural institutions. Overall, the Line Cook role is an excellent opportunity for culinary professionals who are passionate about contributing to a culturally rich environment, taking pride in their craftsmanship, and working with an engaged team dedicated to exceptional dining experiences.
