Job Description

Carnegie Mellon University, located in Pittsburgh, PA, is a renowned private research university celebrated for its innovative programs and commitment to academic excellence. The university is dedicated to fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment for its diverse population of students, faculty, and visitors. The Office of Enrollment Management plays a crucial role in this mission by supporting student success, positive outcomes, and long-term enrollment strategy through data-driven decision-making and collaborative partnerships across the institution. The university's rich tradition of innovation extends beyond academics, embracing cultural and community experiences that align with its strategic goals.

The Office of Enrollment Management at Carnegie Mellon University is actively seeking a motivated, student-focused professional to lead the Tartan Ambassador program, a pivotal initiative in enhancing the visitor experience on campus. This full-time, in-person position serves as the primary leader responsible for overseeing a dynamic team of 70 to over 120 student ambassadors. These ambassadors are carefully selected students who embody the Carnegie Mellon brand and share their personal student journeys with a variety of audiences, including prospective students and their families. They engage visitors through campus tours, events, special projects, and Welcome Center operations, both in-person and virtually.

As the Tartan Ambassador Program Manager, the successful candidate will take charge of hiring, training, scheduling, and mentoring ambassadors across three leadership tiers: Tartan Ambassadors, Host Tartan Ambassadors, and Lead Tartan Ambassadors. Each tier plays a unique role in providing comprehensive visitor services, from leading tours and panels to managing Welcome Center operations and supporting program logistics. This role requires an individual with exceptional organizational and communication skills, a passion for student development, and a collaborative spirit to work effectively with the Visitor Experience team in delivering a high-impact, visitor-centered experience.

Key responsibilities include full supervisory control over the recruitment, performance management, and professional growth of student ambassadors, ensuring alignment with CMU's visitor experience goals. The manager independently handles daily operations such as scheduling, staffing coverage, conflict resolution, and payroll oversight, making critical operational decisions to maintain seamless visitor engagement. They also spearhead strategic projects related to onboarding redesign, specialized training programs, leadership development initiatives, and collaboration with the Strategic Enrollment Communications team for marketing and communication efforts.

The role demands flexibility, as it involves working core business hours from Monday to Friday, with additional evening and weekend commitments on a rotational basis to support ambassador meetings and events. Remote work is occasionally permitted when ambassador programming is not scheduled, but priority is given to on-site presence to ensure robust program delivery.

Candidates must demonstrate a deep commitment to professional development for college students, a service-oriented mindset, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment. Proficiency in office technologies such as Google Workspace, Monday.com, and scheduling systems is essential. The position also requires high emotional intelligence, excellent communication skills, and the ability to navigate complex organizational settings while maintaining professionalism and composure.

Joining Carnegie Mellon University offers an outstanding opportunity to contribute to an institution that values integrity, innovation, and community impact. In addition to competitive salary compensation, employees enjoy a comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, vision insurance, retirement savings with employer contributions, tuition benefits, paid time off, and more, all designed to support personal and professional growth. If you are eager to join a dynamic team committed to shaping the future of higher education through impactful visitor engagement and student leadership development, this position is an ideal fit.
