Job Description
Common Bond Bistro & Bakery is a beloved community-focused restaurant and bakery chain based in Houston, Texas. Established in May 2014 in the Montrose area, Common Bond has grown to include 11 locations across the city, each serving as a gathering place where people connect over exceptional food and pastries. The company is deeply rooted in the local culture, emphasizing not only quality ingredients and preparation but also creating a warm, inviting atmosphere for all customers. From breakfast to late-night desserts, Common Bond is known for its diverse menu featuring extraordinary pastries, custom cakes, and a wide array of baked goods that appeal to a broad range of tastes.
The Pastry Cook role at Common Bond Bistro & Bakery is a vital position within the bakery and pastry team. This role requires a dedicated professional who can prepare high-quality pastry items including breakfast items, desserts, cookies, cakes, breads, creams, simple syrups, amenities, and special request items. Working closely with the Pastry Supervisor, the Pastry Cook will assist in the production and maintenance of par levels for pastries and desserts, ensuring that products are rotated properly and that the highest cleanliness and hygiene standards are maintained within the pastry and bakery section.
The Pastry Cook must have a thorough knowledge of the correct use of kitchen equipment and tools, using them safely and appropriately at all times. Attention to detail is critical in following recipes and yield guides according to departmental standards and in managing inventory, including monitoring production schedules, checking par levels, prioritizing daily production items, and communicating any supply needs or potential shortages to management. Proper storage procedures as mandated by the Health Department and Common Bond's own rigorous standards must be adhered to at all times.
Additional responsibilities include minimizing waste, maintaining a clean and sanitary work environment, assisting with receiving orders and rotating raw ingredients and back stock levels, and being adaptable to any additional duties assigned by management. The role demands physical stamina, including the ability to stand for an entire 8-hour shift and to lift up to 50 pounds. While no formal education is required, a Food Handler's Certification is mandatory, in compliance with local and state health regulations.
Common Bond Bistro & Bakery offers both full-time and part-time employment opportunities for this position with a starting pay of $13.00 per hour. The work schedule includes 8-hour shifts with weekend, holiday, day, and night shift availability, providing flexibility for the right candidate. This hourly, non-exempt position reports directly to the Pastry Lead or Chef de Cuisine, making it a key role in the kitchen hierarchy.
The company also offers a range of employee benefits to support the wellbeing and professional growth of their team members. These benefits include paid time off, health insurance, dental insurance, vision insurance, employee discounts, and paid training. Working at Common Bond means becoming part of a team that is passionate about food and dedicated to providing an outstanding dining experience for the Houston community. This role is perfect for individuals who are enthusiastic about pastry arts, committed to quality, and eager to contribute to a respected establishment with a strong local presence.
