Job Requirements
- Possess a current Control Tower Operator (CTO) Certificate
- Have a current Class II Medical Certificate
- Undergo drug and/or alcohol testing as per DOT/FAA requirements including pre-employment, random, reasonable cause/suspicion, and post-accident
- Have at least six months experience holding a CTO Certificate or equivalent FAA credential with a tower rating in an Air Traffic Control Tower
- Be able to work effectively under general supervision and perform duties independently
- Maintain physical and mental fitness to meet medical and operational standards
Job Qualifications
- Hold a Control Tower Operator Certificate with a facility rating or an FAA credential with a tower rating
- Have a minimum of six months experience in an Air Traffic Control Tower
- Demonstrate knowledge of FAA regulations and air traffic control procedures
- Possess the ability to make quick, precise decisions under pressure
- Maintain clear and effective communication skills
- Exhibit strong situational awareness and ability to manage multiple aircraft
- Show proficiency in using radar, navigational aids, and communication equipment
Job Duties
- Make decisions involving the order of departures that assure equitable treatment and compliance with center or approach control clearances
- Determine the times and direction of takeoff and any necessary departure turns
- Decide whether inbound aircraft are to land immediately or circle and manage distances to control arrival sequencing
- Manage the use of active and secondary runways including simultaneous operations
- Optimize the interspersion of arrivals and departures to minimize traffic delays
- Ensure clearance of landing and departing aircraft to maintain standard runway separation
- Sequence arriving traffic to maintain a safe, orderly flow on final approach
- Apply IFR separation standards delegated by approach control or center control
- Determine usability of communication frequencies and navigational aids
- Monitor control panels and instruct pilots to change frequencies and radar beacon codes
- Coordinate with other controllers on aircraft movements
- Preplan traffic sequencing and separation over extended areas when required
- Maintain a continuous mental picture and evaluation of complex traffic
- Provide continuous radio watch and handle IFR traffic responsibilities
- Study weather bureau reports and forecasts, and operate lighting and signal equipment
- Orient lost or distressed pilots and coordinate with emergency and operations teams
- Perform lower grade level duties to maintain proficiency
- Provide on-the-job training to others
