Job Description

Herschend Family Entertainment, a company with a rich 75-year history, began its journey when the Herschend family discovered wonder deep in an Ozark Mountain cave and decided to share that magic with the world. Today, Herschend stands as the largest family-held themed attractions company in the United States, managing 49 premier attractions and immersive experiences that touch audiences globally. The company’s ethos centers on the belief of bringing families closer together by creating memories worth repeating. This mission is achieved through the dedication of passionate hosts who embody what Herschend calls Heartspitality – a unique blend of heartfelt service and hospitality.

The company's culture is deeply rooted in inclusivity and respect, striving to provide environments where every host, guest, and partner feels welcome, valued, and loved. As an equal-opportunity employer, Herschend emphasizes the importance of treating all individuals with dignity and fairness, fostering an atmosphere that encourages mutual respect in line with their values.

The role available is that of a Barback at Adventureland Park, part of the Herschend family of attractions. As a Barback, the successful candidate will play a crucial behind-the-scenes role in delivering exceptional guest experiences by supporting bartenders and ensuring the bar area is well-stocked and maintained. The Barback is expected to greet guests warmly and professionally, maintain inventory of all bar supplies including liquor, syrups, glasses, napkins, and straws, prepare garnishes, refill ice wells, change beer kegs, and store necessary items correctly before and during service hours. This role requires compliance with all relevant health and safety standards and maintaining a clean, organized bar environment.

In addition to stock management and cleanliness, the Barback assists with resolving maintenance issues such as broken glass or clogged drains and ensures bar tops and service areas are sanitized regularly. Collaboration with management, kitchen staff, and security personnel is essential to provide smooth and efficient service. The Barback also helps with to-go orders and must promptly report any safety hazards or emergencies.

There are no formal education requirements for the Barback position, and prior work experience is not mandatory. However, experience with alcoholic beverage service and knowledge of associated regulations is beneficial. Candidates must either already hold or be willing to obtain a Bartender/Server Certification (such as TIPS) within 30 days of hire if required by state or local guidelines.

Candidates must be at least 18 years old in accordance with Iowa Child Labor Laws, possess reliable transportation, and demonstrate a safety-minded approach to all bar service activities. Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and late hours is essential. The role also demands excellent customer service skills, the ability to multitask, follow directions, work both independently and as part of a team, and maintain a professional appearance according to uniform standards.

Physically, the Barback must be able to stand and walk for most of the workday, perform tasks requiring stooping, bending, lifting objects up to 40 pounds, and be comfortable working in environments subject to heat, humidity, and varying weather conditions. The role is based within various food and beverage or restaurant locations throughout the park and includes exposure to both indoor and outdoor settings with varying noise levels and other typical theme park working conditions.

Working at Adventureland is more than just a job – it’s about creating happiness, making new friends, and enjoying a flexible and fun work environment. Adventureland offers a range of seasonal employment opportunities that allow team members to grow their skills across departments while enjoying perks such as flexible schedules, free admission to the theme park and waterpark, exclusive company events, and much more. Whether embarking on a first job, seeking a second income, or staying active post-retirement, Adventureland presents a rewarding and enjoyable workplace for individuals at all stages of their careers.
