Job Description

Barstow Community College is an open-access, comprehensive two-year institution located in Barstow, California, serving a diverse student population in the Mojave region of San Bernardino County. Established in 1959, the college district encompasses a vast area from the Nevada border to Kern County and from Inyo County to the San Bernardino Mountain range. It serves various communities including Barstow, Lenwood, Newberry Springs, Daggett, Yermo, Hinkley, Ludlow, and Baker, and maintains a satellite learning center at the U.S. Army National Training Center in Ft. Irwin, California for military personnel and their families. This temporary position within the Department of Academic Affairs and Instruction Support division provides vital administrative and clerical support. The role involves performing a variety of office duties such as reception, document transcription, filing, record keeping, and assisting staff, students, and the public. The hourly wage ranges from $17.97 to $27.68, depending on experience. The position is non-exempt and falls under the CL bargaining unit. Candidates will typically perform tasks aligned with established policies, procedures, and routines, ensuring confidentiality and professionalism throughout. Essential functions include handling multi-line telephones, managing files and records, preparing routine correspondence, assisting with scheduling, processing printing orders, and maintaining office supplies.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate administrative expertise and a strong commitment to culturally responsive education, working cooperatively in a collegial and student-centered environment. They must be proficient with modern office technologies including word processing software and telephone etiquette, possess strong organizational skills, and be able to handle multiple tasks to meet deadlines. Physical demands include sufficient hand-eye coordination for computer use, visual acuity for reading documents, and speech and hearing ability for effective communication. Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Course work in general office skills
  • Minimum one year of clerical experience involving data entry and production keyboarding
  • Ability to operate standard office equipment
  • Sufficient English communication skills
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Ability to work under general supervision
  • May require a valid driver’s license

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Course work in general office skills preferred
  • One year of general clerical, data entry, and production keyboarding experience
  • Working knowledge of modern office practices, procedures and equipment
  • Proficiency in computer-aided word processing software
  • Knowledge of alphanumeric record keeping principles and procedures
  • Ability to perform basic arithmetic calculations
  • Proficient English language skills including grammar, spelling and punctuation
  • Strong communication skills to interact cooperatively with customers and staff
  • Ability to organize, maintain records and complete work under supervision
  • Ability to use standard office machines including personal computer keyboards, switchboards, copiers, calculators, and printers
  • Ability to plan, organize, and meet deadlines
  • Ability to communicate positively with peers, students, and the public

Job Duties

  • Answers a multi-line telephone and serves as receptionist to staff, students, and the public
  • Answers inquiries, makes appointments and provides information concerning standards, procedures and programs
  • Performs clerical and typing work related to the office to which assigned
  • Establishes and maintains files as directed
  • Distributes, monitors, and receives documents for filing
  • Posts alphanumeric information to records, making arithmetical computations and securing information from clearly indicative sources
  • Provides information and assistance related to department or program services, requirements and operations
  • Composes routine correspondence
  • Prepares reports, documents, forms and other related materials
  • May assist students and others with completion of forms
  • Assists in arranging and scheduling meetings and appointments
  • May prepare agendas and record meeting minutes
  • May make travel arrangements as instructed
  • Receives and processes document copying orders
  • Prioritizes, processes, packages and distributes completed orders
  • Maintains cleanliness of the document processing room
  • Maintains a supply of materials inventory
  • Requests materials and supplies from internal sources
  • Performs other duties as assigned that support the overall objective of the position
