Job Description

Santa Fe County is a local government entity committed to serving its diverse community by providing essential services and programs to enhance the quality of life for its residents. Among its numerous departments, the Senior Services Division focuses on supporting senior citizens through various initiatives designed to promote health, well-being, and social engagement. The Senior Centers operated by Santa Fe County offer vital resources and a welcoming environment where seniors can participate in recreational, educational, and supportive programs. These centers are essential gathering places that foster community connections and provide seniors with the tools they need to lead fulfilling and active lives.

The Senior Center Specialist role at Santa Fe County Senior Centers is integral to the delivery of this mission. This position is responsible for ensuring a pleasant and inclusive atmosphere for elderly patrons, organizing a wide range of programs and activities that cater to their physical, mental, and social needs. The Specialist administers classes, invites guest speakers and entertainers, and orchestrates special events such as Senior Olympics and Senior Art Shows, promoting vibrant and diverse programming throughout the year. Beyond program management, this role involves conducting needs assessments with seniors to gauge individual and community needs, maintaining accurate records and client assessments in compliance with the New Mexico Aging and Long Term Services Division and the Area Agency on Aging regulations.

In addition to coordinating activities, the Specialist manages the day-to-day operations of individual senior centers, including overseeing volunteers, trainers, and drivers, and ensuring smooth functioning of services such as congregate lunches and meal preparation. They act as a liaison between senior programs and the community, promoting awareness and usage of available resources while resolving conflicts and addressing concerns empathetically and professionally. This role requires a deep understanding of the challenges faced by the aging population, including conditions like Alzheimer’s and dementia, enabling tailored support and compassionate care.

Working conditions blend office tasks with dynamic, direct interactions in the senior center environment, sometimes extending outdoors and involving duties that require physical activity, such as driving seniors and handling supplies. The Specialist must be prepared to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends as needed, to meet the demands of program scheduling and senior activities. The position demands strong organizational skills, verbal and written communication abilities, and proficiency in software applications to manage documentation and reports effectively.

Santa Fe County values candidates who demonstrate patience, tact, and cultural sensitivity, including Spanish language skills to better serve the region’s diverse population. The successful applicant will undergo a thorough background check, pre-employment physical, and drug screening to ensure a safe and trustworthy workplace. A valid New Mexico Class D Driver’s License is required, as driving county vehicles to transport seniors forms an essential component of the role. This position offers an opportunity to make a meaningful impact in the community by enhancing the lives of seniors through dedicated service and compassionate leadership.
