This job opening is for the position of Lead School Lunchroom Helper within the Student Nutrition Services of SFUSD. The position offers a competitive hourly salary range of $28.34 to $37.48, commensurate with experience, and is classified under job class 2616. Employment is permanent exempt with a duration term of three years. The role offers flexibility for full-time or part-time work on a school-term calendar, with shifts available anytime between 7:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. at any SFUSD school site.

As a Lead School Lunchroom Helper, you will play a vital role in ensuring that students receive nutritious and appealing meals that meet federal, state, and local regulatory standards. You will be responsible for overseeing and leading the work of Student Nutrition Workers, guiding them in food preparation, equipment use, point of sale operations, and adherence to food safety protocols. Your duties encompass maintaining compliance with meal program guidelines, ensuring confidentiality regarding meal program eligibility, and coordinating effectively with school staff, students, and parents. The role emphasizes maintaining high standards in food quality, customer service, cleanliness, and accurate record-keeping.

This position requires hands-on involvement in daily food service activities, including following prescribed menus and recipes, monitoring point of sale transactions to ensure accuracy, managing inventory through a first-in-first-out system, and securing food and supplies within budgetary limits. Effective communication and strong organizational skills are crucial. You will be attending meetings, requisitioning food and supplies, coordinating staffing needs, and calling substitutes when necessary to maintain smooth meal service operations.

SFUSD values candidates who demonstrate knowledge of approved food handling practices, cafeteria equipment usage, supply ordering, and inventory control. Experience with basic office equipment including computers and telephones is important for this role. Minimum qualifications include possession of a high school diploma or equivalent, at least one year of routine kitchen work experience including use of point of sale software, and current certification as a Food Safety Manager. Job Duties

  • Provides lead direction guidance and oversight to student nutrition workers
  • Assigns instructs and participates in the work of nutrition workers in following prescribed menus and food preparation tasks
  • Maintains program compliance with federal state and local guidelines
  • Follows approved procedures for point of service transactions and identifies reimbursable meals
  • Maintains confidentiality of meal eligibility information
  • Communicates with site staff parents students and food services regarding account information and policies
  • Provides food preparation and customer service for meal menus and milk sales
  • Maintains high quality food standards and appetizing nutritious meals
  • Ensures accuracy in point of sale transactions and maintains equipment
  • Keeps accurate records and completes required forms as assigned
  • Monitors staffing needs coordinates substitutes and requisitions supplies
  • Attends required meetings and performs related duties as assigned
