Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Ability to acquire food service operator license preferred
  • Experience in institutional food service or quantity food preparation helpful
  • Ability to perform semi-skilled food service duties under supervision
  • Ability to follow food safety and sanitation standards including HACCP
  • Basic communication skills for exchanging information and filling forms
  • Ability to manually and electronically maintain accurate records
  • Basic math skills including measurement conversions
  • Ability to read and understand recipes and regulations
  • Willingness to properly use and maintain kitchen equipment
  • Ability to work cooperatively with staff and students
  • Good personal hygiene and physical ability to handle kitchen tasks
  • Ability to lift up to 40 pounds with assistance
  • Ability to maintain emotional control under stress
  • Ability to work standing and walking for 2 or more hours daily

Job Qualifications

  • Food service operator license preferred but not required
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent, provision may be waived by school district
  • Institutional food service or quantity food preparation experience helpful
  • Ability to acquire necessary skills to plan, prepare, inventory, document, cook, bake, serve meals, and clean-up
  • Knowledge of food service principles, sanitation and HACCP
  • Basic oral, written, and business communication skills
  • Ability to maintain records manually or via computer
  • Basic mathematical skills including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and conversion of measurements
  • Ability to read and interpret recipes, rules, regulations, and instruction manuals
  • Willingness to learn proper use and maintenance of kitchen equipment and utensils
  • Good interpersonal skills and enjoyment working with children
  • Positive attitude towards staff, students, and the public

Job Duties

  • Prepare a variety of foods including soups, entrees, salads, sandwiches, fruits, vegetables, desserts and beverages following standardized recipes and menus
  • Set up food on serving lines, steam tables, salad bars or food bars and serve meals or meal components
  • Use only standardized recipes in food production
  • Assist in serving and selling foods in the cafeteria and common areas
  • Perform cashier duties as needed and ensure students meet reimbursement eligibility
  • Perform cleaning and sanitizing immediately after use of equipment, utensils, and preparation areas
  • Clean kitchen and serving areas after breakfast and lunch and after spills
  • Assist in maintaining accurate inventory by returning unused supplies and food to storage
  • Prepare meals to minimize waste and keep track of inventory usage
  • Assist in maintaining accurate and timely orders and production records as required by state and USDA
  • Operate and clean all kitchen equipment such as ranges, ovens, steamers, mixers, slicers, and dish machines
  • Perform general house cleaning and sanitizing including cleaning freezers, refrigerators, bathrooms, and doing laundry
  • Maintain a professional work environment
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the manager
