About War Memorial Center
The War Memorial Center, located at 750 N. Lincoln Memorial Drive in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, is a distinguished landmark dedicated to honoring the service and sacrifice of U.S. Armed Services members. Established on Veterans Day in 1957, the center was designed by renowned Finnish-American architect Eero Saarinen, known for the St. Louis Gateway Arch and New York's John F. Kennedy Airport.
The center's mission, "Honor the Dead by Serving the Living," is fulfilled through commemorative architecture, educational exhibits, and community engagement. A notable feature is the mosaic mural by Wisconsin artist Edmund D. Lewandowski, installed in 1959, which uses over one million pieces of glass and marble depicting World War II and the Korean War dates.
Visitors can explore various permanent and temporary exhibits on military history and veterans' experiences. Key exhibits include "Lest We Forget – Wisconsin POW/MIA," honoring prisoners of war and the missing in action, and the "Medal of Honor" exhibit recognizing the 64 Wisconsin recipients of the highest military decoration.
The center offers event spaces such as Fitch Plaza, Memorial Hall, and Veterans Courtyard, ideal for weddings, corporate events, and special occasions. These venues provide a unique backdrop with panoramic views of Lake Michigan and downtown Milwaukee.
Additionally, the War Memorial Center serves as a hub for veteran activities, providing over $120,000 in services annually to veterans and veteran service organizations.
The center's hours are daily from 8 AM to 8 PM during summer months (Memorial Day to Labor Day) and 8 AM to 6 PM during the off-season (Labor Day to Memorial Day). It is closed on holidays and private events.
