About University Club of Alabama

The University Club of Alabama, located in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, is a historic private membership club that has undergone a significant transformation. It is now a premier venue for both the University of Alabama community and the broader Tuscaloosa area.

Established in 1834 as a Greek Revival-style mansion by Captain James Dearing, the property has a rich history. It served as the Alabama Governor's Mansion during Governor Arthur P. Bagby's tenure from 1837 to 1841.

In 1944, the University of Alabama acquired the property. By 1946, it was repurposed as the University Club, serving as a social hub for university faculty and staff.

Renovation and Facilities

In May 2024, after a comprehensive $17 million renovation, the University Club reopened. This renovation blends its storied past with modern amenities.

Several reimagined spaces were introduced, including casual and fine dining areas, an outdoor veranda, conference rooms, and private event spaces.

The club's dining venues feature fine dining at Legacy 1834 and casual dining at The Tusk Bar and Grill. These foster a relaxed atmosphere of camaraderie and connection for members.

New programming such as game-day tailgates, brunches, and holiday events has also been introduced to enhance member experience.
