About The Modern
The Modern is a distinguished two Michelin-starred restaurant located within the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York City. Established in 2005 by Danny Meyer's Union Square Hospitality Group, it offers a refined dining experience blending contemporary American cuisine with an artistic ambiance.
Executive Chef Thomas Allan, appointed in 2020, crafts innovative dishes highlighting exceptional ingredients and seasonality. The restaurant presents three distinct dining experiences:
Dining Experiences
- The Modern: The main dining room offers two tasting menus—Impressions and Abstractions. Impressions is a succinct yet adventurous menu, while Abstractions provides a more extensive signature experience. Both menus change frequently, reflecting commitment to seasonal ingredients.
- The Bar Room: A lively space with an à la carte menu complemented by an award-winning wine program, cocktails, beer, and spirits. Guests may dine in The Bar Room, adjacent lounge, or at the vibrant marble bar. Walk-ins and reservations are accepted.
- The Kitchen Table: An intimate experience seating up to four guests in the heart of the kitchen, featuring an enhanced tasting menu crafted by Chef Allan.
Design and Atmosphere
The Modern’s design is inspired by the Bauhaus movement and features a luminescent glass wall alongside a 46-foot marble bar. This creates a serene dining environment overlooking MoMA's Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Sculpture Garden.

Since its debut, The Modern has earned numerous accolades, including two Michelin stars, three stars from The New York Times, the Grand Award from Wine Spectator, and four James Beard Awards. These awards include Best New Restaurant and Outstanding Wine Service.
