Steppenwolf Theatre Company, founded in 1974 by Terry Kinney, Jeff Perry, and Gary Sinise, has evolved from its humble beginnings in a Highland Park church basement to become one of the nation's premier ensemble theaters.

Celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2025, Steppenwolf continues to redefine the landscape of acting and performance.

Location and Facilities

The company operates from a purpose-built complex in Chicago's Lincoln Park neighborhood, featuring three distinct performance spaces:

  • Downstairs Theatre: A 515-seat venue hosting world premieres and fresh interpretations of classic and contemporary plays.
  • Upstairs Theatre: A 299-seat theater reflecting the company's commitment to the intimacy of the actor-audience relationship.
  • 1700 Theatre: An 80-seat flexible space dedicated to the Steppenwolf company and emerging local theater companies.

Artistic Programming

Steppenwolf's artistic programming includes a main stage season, a two-play Steppenwolf for Young Adults season, Visiting Company engagements, and LookOut, a multi-genre performance series.

The company has produced over 40 original works that have enjoyed success nationally and internationally including Broadway, Off-Broadway, London, Sydney, Galway, and Dublin.

Education and Community Engagement

In addition to its performances, Steppenwolf is committed to education and community engagement.

The Loft, a dedicated space for education programs, includes classrooms, rehearsal and meeting spaces for educator training, and Young Adult Council events.

Through the Loft, Steppenwolf aims to increase the number of students served from 20,000 to 30,000.
