About St Francis Yacht Club

St. Francis Yacht Club (StFYC), established in 1927, is a prestigious private sailing club located on the shores of San Francisco Bay. Renowned for its rich history and commitment to the sport of sailing, the club offers a wide array of activities and amenities for its members and guests.

Clubhouse and Location

The club's clubhouse, designed by esteemed architect Willis Polk, is situated at 700 Marina Boulevard, San Francisco, California, 94123. This prime location provides breathtaking panoramic views of the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz Island, and the Marin Headlands.

The Mediterranean Revival-style building houses three dining venues: the Main Dining Room, the Clippership Lounge, and the Grill Room. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, StFYC expanded its facilities to include two outdoor dining areas: the Race Deck on the rooftop, and the Courtyard, centrally located and protected from strong bay winds.

Active Sailing Program

StFYC is renowned for its active sailing program, hosting numerous regattas and races for sailboats of all sizes. Notable events include:

  • The Rolex Big Boat Series
  • The Kleinman/Swiftsure Regatta
  • The Elvstrom/Zellerbach Regatta
  • The Jessica Cup for classic yachts

The club also hosts World, Continental, and National Championships for classes such as 5O5, Farr-40, Melges-24, Farr-30, Express-27, and Express-37.

Outstation Facility

In addition to racing, StFYC maintains an outstation on Tinsley Island, located a few miles west of Stockton, California, in the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta. This facility offers members and their guests opportunities for cruises, events, and sailing classes.

The outstation is open and staffed year-round, providing a peaceful retreat during the summer months and a slower pace during winter.

Annual Events

The club is known for hosting "The Big Sail", an annual exhibition sailing contest between the University of California, Berkeley Club Sailing Team and the Stanford Cardinal Sailing Team.

This regatta, held on the Tuesday or Wednesday preceding The Big Game, features divisions for Varsity, Alumni, Masters, Grandmasters, and Women's teams, fostering collegiate sailing rivalry and camaraderie.
