About Portland Public Schools
Portland Public Schools (PPS), established in 1851, is the largest school district in Oregon. It serves over 44,700 students across 86 schools.
The district includes a diverse range of educational institutions: 62 elementary schools, 29 middle schools, and 11 high schools. PPS offers a comprehensive education from Pre-K through 12th grade.
Specialized Programs
PPS is dedicated to fostering academic excellence, innovation, and inclusivity. It offers specialized programs such as the Clarendon Regional Early Learning Academy, a model for early childhood education.
Language immersion programs are available in Spanish, Chinese, Russian, Japanese, and Vietnamese, equipping students with valuable bilingual and multicultural skills. The district has expanded Career and Technical Education (CTE) partnerships to provide real-world experience and career readiness skills before graduation.
Safety and Community Efforts
The district emphasizes addressing community concerns and enhancing student safety. In 2020, PPS discontinued regular school resource officers and plans to re-examine its partnership with the Portland Police Bureau.
Additionally, PPS investigates environmental safety issues such as lead and radon levels in school buildings and implements measures to maintain student safety.
