About Perkins Restaurants
Perkins Restaurant & Bakery, established in 1958, is a renowned American casual dining chain that specializes in serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner. It also features an in-house bakery offering a variety of freshly baked goods.
With a rich history spanning over six decades, Perkins has become a beloved destination for those seeking homestyle comfort food in a welcoming environment.
The journey began in Cincinnati, Ohio, when Matt and Ivan Perkins opened Smithies Pancake House, offering an extensive selection of pancakes and waffles.
In 1969, the establishment rebranded as Perkins Cake & Steak, introducing a broader menu that included hearty lunch and dinner options. This evolution continued, leading to the current name, Perkins Restaurant & Bakery, reflecting its expanded offerings.
Menu Highlights
A hallmark of Perkins is its all-day breakfast menu, allowing guests to enjoy favorites like pancakes, omelets, and waffles at any time.
The lunch and dinner menus feature a variety of American classics, including burgers, sandwiches, salads, and homestyle entrees.
The in-house bakery is particularly celebrated for its Mammoth Muffins®, pies, cookies, and other delectable pastries, ensuring every meal is complemented by a sweet treat.
Company Growth and Expansion
As of March 2024, Perkins operates 265 locations across 32 states in the U.S. and two Canadian provinces.
The largest concentrations are in Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Florida, and Wisconsin. Notably, Minnesota hosts approximately 16% of the chain's locations, one of the highest rates in the country.
In 2006, Perkins expanded by merging with Marie Callender's, a chain known for fresh-baked pies and frozen entrees. This merger diversified its baked goods and meal offerings, broadening its appeal.
Recent Developments
In 2019, Perkins faced significant challenges when its parent company filed for bankruptcy and closed several under-performing restaurants.
Following this, Huddle House acquired all remaining Perkins locations. Then, in May 2020, Ascent Hospitality Management, based in Atlanta, purchased Huddle House, making Perkins a subsidiary of Ascent.
Today, Perkins maintains a commitment to friendly service and classic comfort dishes at great prices, remaining a favorite among families and individuals seeking a reliable dining experience.
