Missoula County Public Schools (MCPS) is a public school district located in Missoula, Montana, serving over 9,000 students across 17 schools.
The district comprises nine elementary schools, three middle schools, four high schools—including Big Sky High School, Hellgate High School, Sentinel High School, and Seeley-Swan High School—and an alternative high school program.
Additionally, MCPS offers preschool programs and adult education through the Lifelong Learning Center.
Educational Programs
The district's mission is to ensure that each student achieves their full and unique potential, regardless of circumstances or abilities.
To support this mission, MCPS has implemented innovative educational programs, including the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Program at Hellgate and Big Sky High Schools.
Other IB programs include the IB Primary Years Program at Lewis and Clark Elementary and the IB Middle Years Program at Washington Middle School.
The district also offers a Dual Language learning program at Paxson Elementary and Washington Middle School, a Project Lead The Way STEM curriculum K-12, and a robust Career and Technical Education program that includes apprenticeships and student-run businesses.
Financial Challenges
In recent years, MCPS has faced budget challenges, including an $8 million deficit due to shortfalls in the general budget and a reduction in ESSER funds.
These financial constraints have led to discussions about potential budget cuts affecting various positions within the district.
Commitment to Students and Community
Despite these challenges, MCPS remains committed to providing a high-quality education that empowers, inspires, and prepares each student for their future.
The district values a student-centered approach that includes equity, innovation, safety, inclusion, and strong relationships with staff, families, students, and the community.
