About IACMI – The Composites Institute
IACMI – The Composites Institute is a leading organization dedicated to advancing the development and adoption of innovative composite manufacturing technologies across various industries, including automotive, aerospace, wind energy, and infrastructure.
Established in 2015 by the U.S. Department of Energy, IACMI is a collaborative network comprising over 170 members from industry, academia, and government agencies.
The institute's mission is to accelerate the commercialization of low-cost, energy-efficient advanced composites through public-private partnerships. By leveraging the collective expertise of its members, IACMI aims to enhance U.S. manufacturing competitiveness and foster economic growth.
Core Activities
- Research and Development: The institute facilitates industry-led R&D projects that have led to the commercialization of numerous composite-based products, advancements in technology readiness levels, and the creation of hundreds of design, engineering, and manufacturing jobs.
- Workforce Development: IACMI offers comprehensive training programs, including internships, workshops, and educational initiatives. These efforts have resulted in over 100 internships, 18,300 STEM outreach engagements, and training for more than 5,100 individuals in composites, CNC machining, metrology, and metallurgy.
- Facility Access: The institute provides open access to state-of-the-art facilities across multiple states, enabling companies, universities, and national labs to scale up their composite manufacturing processes. This infrastructure has led to additional investments and resources for various stakeholders.
Headquarters and Facilities
In February 2025, IACMI celebrated the opening of its new national headquarters in Knoxville, Tennessee, located within the University of Tennessee Research Park at Cherokee Farm.
This facility co-locates IACMI's offices with the expanded UT Fibers and Composites Manufacturing Facility, a 44,000 square-foot laboratory dedicated to advanced composites and manufacturing research, commercialization, and workforce training.
