HHSC East Hawaii Region (Hilo Benioff Medical Center)

Hilo Benioff Medical Center, formerly known as Hilo Medical Center, is the largest healthcare facility in Hawai‘i Island and serves as a pivotal component of the East Hawai‘i Region within the Hawaii Health Systems Corporation (HHSC). It is located at 1190 Waianuenue Avenue in Hilo, HI. The center is a 166-bed acute care hospital and functions as a Level III Trauma Center, handling over 50,000 emergency room visits annually.

The medical center offers a comprehensive range of inpatient and outpatient services across 33 specialties. These include cardiology, orthopedics, oncology, and neurology.

Its medical staff comprises approximately 250 physicians, advanced practice providers, and specialists dedicated to delivering high-quality care to the community.

East Hawai‘i Health Clinics

In addition to acute care, Hilo Benioff Medical Center manages the East Hawai‘i Health Clinics. This network of primary and specialty care clinics is situated on its 20-acre campus.

These clinics provide services such as urgent care, primary care, and specialized treatments in areas like oncology and gynecologic surgery.

Veterans Care

The center is also home to the Yukio Okutsu State Veterans Home, which honors and provides care for veterans.

Expansion Project

In April 2024, Hilo Benioff Medical Center launched an $80 million expansion project to enhance its facilities and services.

This initiative includes:

• The construction of a new 19-bed Intensive Care Unit
• 36 additional hospital beds
• Addressing the growing healthcare needs of Hawai‘i Island's population

The expansion is expected to be completed by spring 2026.
