Hampton Roads Transit

Hampton Roads Transit (HRT) is the regional public transportation provider for Virginia's Hampton Roads metropolitan area. It encompasses the cities of Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Portsmouth, Hampton, Newport News, and the town of Smithfield.

Established on October 1, 1999, through the merger of PENTRAN and Tidewater Regional Transit, HRT offers a comprehensive suite of transportation services designed to meet the diverse needs of the region's residents and visitors.

Services Offered by Hampton Roads Transit

• Bus Service: HRT operates a network of nearly 60 local bus routes, providing extensive coverage across the metropolitan area. These routes facilitate convenient and efficient travel for daily commuters, students, and tourists alike.
• Light Rail – The Tide: In Norfolk, HRT manages "The Tide," Virginia's first light rail system. Spanning 7.4 miles, The Tide connects key locations such as the Eastern Virginia Medical School, downtown Norfolk, Norfolk State University, and Newtown Road. Since its inauguration on August 19, 2011, this system has enhanced urban mobility and reduced traffic congestion.
• Ferry Service: HRT operates three paddle wheel ferries across the Elizabeth River, linking Norfolk and Portsmouth. These ferries provide a scenic and efficient alternative to road travel, with service every 30 minutes and increased frequency during peak times.
• On-Demand Microtransit Service: To address transportation needs of areas not served by fixed routes, HRT introduced an On-Demand microtransit service. This ridesharing option operates within designated zones in Newport News and Virginia Beach, allowing passengers to book rides via a mobile app for a nominal fee.
• Paratransit Services: Committed to accessible transportation, HRT provides paratransit services catering to individuals unable to use standard transit due to mobility challenges.
• Traffix Program: Under the "Traffix" brand, HRT offers transportation demand management programs aimed at reducing traffic congestion and promoting alternative commuting options like carpooling, vanpooling, and telework programs.

Technological Enhancements

HRT continually invests in technology to improve service quality and customer experience. In November 2024, the agency equipped all buses, trolleys, light rail cars, and ferries with free Wi-Fi, ensuring passengers have connectivity during their journeys.

Additionally, HRT has implemented smart stop bus signs at over 2,600 locations, providing real-time bus information and enhancing passenger convenience.

Fleet and Infrastructure

As of Summer 2024, HRT's fleet includes over 300 buses, nine light rail vehicles, and three ferries. The agency has been proactive in modernizing its fleet by incorporating low-floor model buses and exploring electric vehicle options to promote sustainability.

Community Engagement

HRT is deeply committed to community engagement and regularly participates in local events and festivals, such as the Seawall Festival, to connect with residents and promote public transit usage.
