About Environment for the Americas

Environment for the Americas (EFTA) is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting bird conservation and environmental education across the Western Hemisphere. Established in 1994, EFTA connects diverse communities to birds and nature. It inspires the next generation of conservationists through various programs and initiatives.

One of EFTA's flagship programs is International Migratory Bird Day (IMBD), the only international education program that highlights and celebrates the migration of nearly 350 species of migratory birds. These birds travel between nesting habitats in North America and non-breeding grounds in Latin America, Mexico, and the Caribbean.

Each year, IMBD explores a different aspect of migratory birds and their conservation.

Conservation Efforts and Impact

In 2022, EFTA welcomed more than 150 students and early-career professionals through its conservation internship programs, marking a record year for participation.

The organization also collaborated with hundreds of educators from Canada to Argentina and the Caribbean. They promoted migratory bird conservation through World Migratory Bird Day events across the Western Hemisphere.

Additionally, EFTA made significant progress in:

  • Facilitating the development of a conservation plan for the Rufous Hummingbird and other western migratory hummingbird species.
  • Restoring important coastal habitats for shorebirds in the Pacific Northwest.

Mission

EFTA's mission is to connect diverse people to birds and nature and inspire the next generation of conservationists. It emphasizes the protection of birds and their habitats by fostering connections between people and nature.

Location

The organization is headquartered in Boulder, Colorado, USA.
