About El Cholo

El Cholo is a historic Mexican restaurant chain that has been serving traditional cuisine since 1923. Founded by Alejandro and Rosa Borquez in Los Angeles, the establishment was originally named Sonora Café. In 1925, a guest drew a caricature of a "cholo," a term used by Spanish settlers to refer to field hands, which led to the renaming of the restaurant.

Over the decades, El Cholo has become a cornerstone of Southern California's culinary scene, known for its authentic Mexican dishes and rich history. The menu features classic items such as enchiladas, tamales, albondigas (meatball soup), chili rellenos, and refried beans. These dishes reflect the regional cuisine of the Borquez family's roots in Sonora, Mexico.

El Cholo is credited with introducing several iconic Mexican dishes to the United States. In the 1930s, it was among the first to serve burritos in a restaurant setting. In 1959, waitress Carmen Rocha introduced nachos to Los Angeles, a dish she learned from San Antonio, Texas.

The restaurant's ambiance is steeped in history, with original elements like the stove and fireplace still in use at the original location. Over the years, El Cholo has expanded to multiple locations across Southern California.
