About DISTRICT ATTORNEY-MANHATTAN
The Manhattan District Attorney's Office (DANY) is the principal prosecutorial agency for New York County, encompassing the borough of Manhattan. Established in 1801, it is one of the oldest and most prominent district attorney's offices in the United States.
The office prosecutes violations of New York State laws within its jurisdiction. It handles a wide array of criminal cases ranging from minor offenses to major felonies.
Under the leadership of District Attorney Alvin Bragg, who assumed office on January 1, 2022, DANY has undertaken several high-profile cases. Notably, the office secured a historic conviction against former President Donald Trump in 2024. This was the first criminal conviction of a former U.S. president.
The case involved charges related to falsifying business records about hush money payments during the 2016 presidential campaign.
DANY is committed to criminal justice reform and victim support. It has established specialized units like the Civil Rights Unit, which prosecutes civil rights violations including hate crimes and police misconduct.
The Witness Aid Services Unit (WASU) offers comprehensive social services to victims and witnesses. These include housing assistance, counseling, and emergency services.
