About Discovery Center Collective
The Discovery Center Collective, established in 2023, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering curiosity and learning through interactive science and nature experiences in the Texas Panhandle.
This collective was formed by merging two esteemed institutions: the Don Harrington Discovery Center (DHDC) and the Wildcat Bluff Nature Center (WBNC).
Don Harrington Discovery Center
Founded in 1976, the Don Harrington Discovery Center has long been a cornerstone of informal science education in Amarillo.
It has expanded from a modest gallery and planetarium into a vibrant hub featuring interactive exhibits, state-of-the-art technology, and an outdoor science park.
Its mission is to provide engaging science experiences that complement formal education, catering to visitors of all ages.
Wildcat Bluff Nature Center
Established in 1992, Wildcat Bluff Nature Center offers a unique outdoor educational experience with seven miles of trails through grasslands, canyons, and bluff views.
It serves as a vital resource for environmental education, promoting mental well-being, physical health, and academic performance, particularly in science.
The center collaborates with local schools to provide accessible spaces for outdoor learning and recreation.
Community and Impact
Together, the Discovery Center Collective serves a diverse community, including students, educators, and residents of the Texas Panhandle and neighboring regions.
Since 2009, it has welcomed an average of 140,000 guests annually, inspiring learners from early childhood through adulthood.
The organization is committed to bridging educational gaps by offering equitable access to informal education and addressing challenges like screen dependency and limited resources.
