The Department of Transitional Assistance (DTA) is a Massachusetts state agency dedicated to assisting and empowering low-income individuals and families. Its mission is to help residents meet their basic needs, enhance their quality of life, and achieve long-term economic self-sufficiency.

Serving approximately one in six residents of the Commonwealth, DTA provides a range of services, including direct economic assistance (cash benefits), food assistance through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), and workforce training opportunities.

Key Services Offered by DTA

• SNAP Benefits: Formerly known as food stamps, SNAP helps eligible individuals and families purchase nutritious food. Applications can be submitted online, by phone, or in person at local DTA offices.
• Transitional Aid to Families with Dependent Children (TAFDC): This program provides cash assistance to families with dependent children under 18 or 19 years old, as well as to pregnant women in their last 120 days of pregnancy. TAFDC also offers support services such as child care, transportation, and referrals to other social services. Participants may be required to engage in work-related programs to receive benefits.
• Emergency Aid to the Elderly, Disabled, and Children (EAEDC): This program offers cash assistance to individuals who are elderly, disabled, or have dependent children and are in need of financial support.
• Workforce Training and Employment Services: DTA provides various programs to help individuals develop job skills, search for employment, and secure job placements. Educational opportunities, such as GED and adult literacy programs, are also available.
• Additional Support Services: DTA offers assistance with child care, transportation, and referrals to other services to support individuals and families in achieving economic mobility.

• Lowell Office: Located at 131 Davidson Street, Lowell, MA 01852. This office provides a range of services, including self-service options and assistance from staff and interpreters.
• Holyoke Office: Situated at 72-100 Front Street, Holyoke, MA 01040. This office offers services similar to those in Lowell, including self-service options and staff assistance.
