Cub Foods is a prominent American supermarket chain operating primarily in Minnesota and Illinois. Established in 1968 in Stillwater, Minnesota, by brothers Charles and Jack Hooley, along with Robert Thueson and Culver Davis Jr., the name "CUB" stands for "Consumers United for Buying."

This innovative approach positioned Cub Foods as one of the first total discount food stores in the United States.

In 1980, Cub Foods was acquired by Minnesota-based SuperValu, significantly expanding its presence. By 1999, the chain had grown to 83 stores across three states, including Minnesota, Illinois, and Colorado.

However, in 2003, Cub Foods exited the Colorado market, selling most of its stores to Kroger.

In 2018, the company rebranded, dropping "Foods" from its name to simply "Cub," reflecting a broader assortment of goods and services. This strategic move aimed to enhance its competitiveness against other retailers like Hy-Vee, Target, Walmart, and Aldi.

As of April 30, 2025, Cub Foods operates 105 stores, with 104 located in Minnesota and one in Illinois. The majority of these stores are situated in the Twin Cities area, including Minneapolis and Saint Paul.
