About Crozer Health
Crozer Health was a comprehensive healthcare system based in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, dedicated to delivering a wide array of medical services to the community.
Its mission focused on enhancing the health status of the populations it served by providing a seamless continuum of quality healthcare, including primary care, health promotion, acute and long-term care, rehabilitation, and restorative services.
Crozer Health aimed to deploy its resources in a cost-effective and community-responsive manner, working in partnership with physicians and other health professionals to forge new alliances with community health and social service organizations.
The overarching goal was to build a healthy environment for residents to live, work, and maintain their families.
Vision and Mission
The healthcare system's vision was to be a community-focused entity that delivered patient-centered, quality care efficiently and compassionately, meeting the health needs demonstrated by the community.
Crozer Health committed to its academic mission by educating both current and future clinicians and caregivers.
It explored and implemented new technologies for delivering care and embraced legitimate complementary forms of care in response to changing consumer demand.
The system fostered leaders who took up the challenges of advocacy and innovation on local and national levels.
It constantly strived to build partnerships within the community to meet the emotional, physical, and spiritual needs of those served.
Crozer Health created an environment where each board member, employee, physician, and volunteer utilized their creativity, learning, and skills to promote the health and well-being of patients, their families, communities, and each other.
Additionally, the system accepted responsibility for being the steward of community health resources and conducted its affairs in a manner that preserved and enhanced the availability of appropriate services for future generations.
Facilities and Services
Crozer Health operated several facilities, including:
- Crozer-Chester Medical Center in Upland, housing a Level II trauma center and the Nathan Speare Regional Burn Treatment Center
- Delaware County Memorial Hospital in Drexel Hill, offering a broad spectrum of acute and specialized services with a busy emergency department and surgical facilities
- Springfield Hospital in Springfield
- Taylor Hospital in Ridley Park
The system also managed outpatient centers such as Crozer Brinton Lake in Glen Mills, Crozer Health at Broomall in Broomall, Media Medical Plaza in Media, and Community Campus in Chester.
These facilities provided a broad range of services from emergency care to specialized treatments across the Delaware County area.
Financial Challenges and Closures
In April 2025, Crozer Health faced significant financial challenges, leading to the closure of two major hospitals—Taylor Hospital in Ridley Park and Crozer-Chester Medical Center in Upland—after failing to find a buyer during Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings.
This closure impacted over 78,000 annual emergency room visits and resulted in thousands of layoffs, creating a substantial healthcare gap in the Philadelphia suburbs.
Nearby hospitals such as Riddle Hospital, Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, and Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital experienced a surge in patient volume following the closures.
Despite the hospital closures, ambulatory centers in Brinton Lakes, Broomall, Haverford, and Media remained operational.
Acquisition and Continuity of Care
Following the closures, ChristianaCare, a Delaware-based health system, acquired five of Crozer Health's outpatient facilities in Delaware County.
These facilities included locations in Glen Mills, Havertown, Broomall, and Media.
ChristianaCare's acquisition aimed to provide stability and continuity of access to care for patients in the region.
