About Community Renewal Team
Community Renewal Team (CRT) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering individuals and families in Hartford and Middlesex Counties, Connecticut. Its goal is to help them achieve healthy and economically stable futures. Established in 1963, CRT has been central in addressing challenges such as hunger, homelessness, unemployment, and poverty.
By collaborating with local officials, service providers, businesses, and the community, CRT enhances access to essential services including education, affordable housing, and mental health support.

Programs and Impact
Operating as the designated community action agency for both counties, CRT provides over 45 programs designed to meet immediate needs and foster long-term stability.
In 2024, CRT served more than 49,000 individuals across 40 municipalities. Notably, 95.2% of every dollar is allocated directly to programs and services, emphasizing its commitment to effective resource use.
Key Programs and Services Offered by CRT
- Housing Counseling: Assisting residents in avoiding foreclosure by helping negotiate with lenders, modify loans, and explore refinancing options. Services cover eligible communities within Hartford and Middlesex Counties.
- Energy Assistance: Providing heating help through the Connecticut Energy Assistance Program to eligible households, covering heating sources such as natural gas, electricity, and deliverable fuels.
- Child Care and Early Education: Operating licensed child care centers with affordable, high-quality education for children up to five years old. Centers use the Creative Curriculum to prepare children for kindergarten focusing on holistic development.
- Homeless Outreach: Offering behavioral health services to homeless individuals, including counseling, crisis intervention, and case management addressing substance abuse, mental health, and employment challenges.
- Financial Literacy and Savings Programs: Hosting workshops and credit counseling to assist with money management, credit improvement, and savings. Programs include a 14-week Financial Literacy Institute, first-time homebuyer education, and monthly financial fitness classes.
CRT’s holistic approach blends research, compassion, and accountability to assess local needs, develop programs, and secure funding. It fosters community engagement and advocates for systemic change to improve quality of life in Central Connecticut.
