About BELCAMPO

Belcampo was a California-based company founded in 2012 by Anya Fernald and Todd Robinson. It was dedicated to providing high-quality, sustainable, and humane meat products. The company operated a vertically integrated supply chain, including its own farm, processing facility, butcher shops, and restaurants. This ensured full traceability and transparency for consumers.

Belcampo Farms

At the heart of Belcampo's operations was Belcampo Farms, a 27,000-acre property in Mount Shasta, California. The farm emphasized regenerative agriculture practices with a focus on soil health and carbon sequestration.

They rotated animals on diverse pastures and implemented low-stress animal handling techniques. These practices aimed to cultivate healthy soil, capture carbon, and limit impact on the watershed. Between 2013 and 2019, soil carbon levels increased by an average of 19.22%, showing the effectiveness of these efforts.

Processing Facility

Belcampo’s USDA-inspected processing facility was a multi-species meat plant designed by Temple Grandin, renowned for expertise in humane animal handling. This in-house facility allowed them to maintain strict quality control and ensure the humane treatment of animals throughout the process.

Butcher Shops and Restaurants

The company operated several butcher shops and restaurants across California. These included locations in:

  • San Mateo
  • Oakland
  • Santa Monica
  • Los Angeles
  • West Hollywood

These establishments offered farm-to-table dining experiences. Customers could trace their meals back to Belcampo Farms, supporting the company’s commitment to sustainability and transparency.

Challenges and Changes

In 2021, Belcampo faced significant challenges after a scandal involving a former employee exposed mislabeling of meat products. As a result, the company closed all its restaurants and retail locations and ceased e-commerce and retail operations.

Despite these closures, Belcampo's farm and processing facility remained operational. The company explored new distribution channels, supplying non-branded products through collaborations with other companies.

Commitment and Mission

Throughout its operation, Belcampo was committed to producing meat that was good for people, animals, and the planet. By controlling every step—from raising animals on their own farm to processing and selling the meat—they aimed to deliver high-quality, sustainable, and humane products.

Locations

Although originally based in California, Belcampo also has presence in:

  • NYC, NY, USA
  • New York, NY, USA
