Balls Foods

Balls Food Stores, a family-owned and operated business since 1923, has evolved from a single neighborhood grocery store into a prominent leader in the Kansas City metropolitan area. Founded by Sidney and Mollie Ball, the company now operates 25 supermarkets under various banners, including Hen House Market, Price Chopper, Sun Fresh Market, and Payless Discount Foods.

The company's journey began with a modest store at 16th and Stewart in Kansas City, Kansas. In 1934, they introduced the "cash-and-carry" system, allowing customers to pay for and take their groceries home without creating a tab. By the late 1980s, Balls Food Stores had expanded to 13 locations. At this time, all three of Sidney and Mollie's grandchildren—David, Diane, and Debbie—were actively involved in the business.

Leadership and Ownership

Under the leadership of David Ball, the third generation, the company has continued to innovate and grow. In 2024, to celebrate its 100th anniversary, Balls Food Stores transitioned ownership to its employees through an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP). This move reinforces its commitment to a teammate-centric culture.

In 2021, Balls Food Stores invested in the community by reconstructing and renovating several locations, including the Hen House Market in Olathe and multiple Price Chopper stores in Kansas City and Leavenworth. These projects featured energy-efficient technologies and expanded services to better serve the community.
