Job Requirements

  • Basic reading and writing skills
  • six months of custodial work experience preferred
  • janitorial certification or relevant training preferred
  • valid Texas driver’s license or ability to obtain one within 90 days preferred
  • physical ability to lift up to 50 pounds and carry up to 25 pounds
  • willingness to work nights, weekends, holidays, or other non-traditional schedules
  • ability to pass background checks if required
  • exposure to chemicals and mechanical hazards
  • ability to stand, walk, bend, and kneel extensively during work
  • adherence to City of Abilene Core Values

Job Qualifications

  • Six months of experience in custodial work is preferred
  • formal or informal education or training ensuring the ability to read and write is preferred
  • janitorial certification, training, or relevant certification preferred
  • current valid Texas driver’s license or ability to obtain one within ninety days or military waiver preferred
  • ability to maintain cleaning schedule with minimum supervision
  • effective oral and written communication skills
  • ability to establish cooperative working relationships
  • familiarity with custodial equipment operation

Job Duties

  • Sweep and mop floors
  • vacuum
  • dust and clean offices and other work areas
  • collect and remove waste
  • clean and restock restrooms
  • strip and wax floors
  • move or lift furniture, boxes, and other materials
  • open and close the facility for use and secure the facility for closing
  • operate carpet extractor machine and buffers to polish floors
  • daily operate a City vehicle or personal vehicle to travel between City facilities in order to complete assigned work
