North Beach Village is a neighborhood in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, renowned for its collection of mid-century hotels and garden apartments. Developed in the post-World War II era, the area became a popular destination for tourists seeking a tropical retreat.
However, by the 1970s, the neighborhood experienced a period of decline, leading to the deterioration of many properties.
Redevelopment and Investment
In 2008, Swedish entrepreneur Pär Olof Sandå recognized the potential of North Beach Village and embarked on an ambitious redevelopment project. He acquired over 30 deteriorating properties within a block of the beach, envisioning a transformation into a European-style village.
The planned village features plazas, bistros, and communal spaces. Sandå invested approximately $100 million in renovating and developing the area over the years.
Architectural Restoration
The redevelopment focused on restoring mid-century modern architecture while incorporating contemporary interiors. Fifteen boutique hotels were renovated within a 1.5-mile radius.
These include notable hotels such as North Beach Hotel, AQUA Hotel, Tranquilo Hotel, and the recently completed Flow Hotel. The properties blend mid-century modern designs with pop art installations, creating a unique aesthetic.
Landmarks and Historical Charm
The neighborhood also features landmarks like The Royal Scot, built in 1937, and the Birch Tower condominium designed by architect Charles McKirahan in the late 1950s.
The Birch House apartment building, constructed in 1959, adds to the area's historical charm.
